Baseball social reacts to the Hall of Fame elections of Mariano and Edgar

What an historic day. Mariano Rivera became the first player elected unanimously by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Edgar Martínez was finally elected on his last year on the ballot.

Canaleros were feliz.

Boricuas were feliz.

WE were feliz.

The praise for Mo and Gar rained down from all over. Former teammates, mentees, elected officials, sports franchises, heck, even Metallica sent their congrats. In today’s El Bullpen, we bring to you some of our favorite moments and reactions to yesterday’s announcement.

The Call

How did Mariano and Edgar react when they received the call of a lifetime?

Make it official

Welcome to Cooperstown

Hall of Famers Pedro Martínez, Iván Rodríguez and Orlando Cepeda took to social media to welcome Edgar and Mariano to their exclusive fraternity.

Our heroes

Current players and former teammates also congratulated the two legends on their election.

Everybody in

Everyone in Seattle and New York joined the celebration, from the NFL teams in each city to politicians, the transit system in Seattle and, of course, Metallica. Even though they’re not on Mo’s playlist, they’re still thrilled for him to be headed to the Hall.

The Governor of Puerto Rico happily added Edgar to his island’s HOF list; there are now five Boricuas in the Hall.

The New York football Giants and the Seattle Seahawks both showed love for baseball icons in their cities.

Seattle’s transit system celebrated Edgar punching his ticket to Cooperstown.

A tribute from the YES Network was sweet for Mo.

Puerto Rican boxing champion Amanda Serrano rang the bell for Edgar.

And, finally, Jimmy Traina shared one of the moments Yankees – indeed, baseball – fans will remember forever.
