Berríos gives tour, Sánchez family time, Orioles ready for draft

What’s in La Mákina’s Locker?

José Berríos gave MLB Puerto Rico a tour of his locker on Instagram. We might need him to help organize our closet!

Yolmer and son

We love White Sox utility man Yolmer Sánchez for his hilarious antics, including dumping the Gatorade jug over his own head. But on Thursday night before hosting the Cleveland Indians he showed off his parenting skills on the field when his son joined him for warm-ups. The little guy even got in some high fives with the fans!

CarGo to Chicago

Veteran outfielder Carlos González was recently released by the Cleveland Indians, but he found a new home on Thursday: in Chicago. Well, more specifically Iowa. The Cubs signed CarGo to a minor league contract.

Orioles in first

Baltimore is in first… position to pick when the 2019 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins Monday. They provided this interesting look at their scouting process ahead of the draft on Twitter.

How important is the draft to a team’s success? MLB Pipeline reminded us how loaded the draft was 10 years ago. And yes, this will be painful for fans of the teams that owned the 23 picks used before the Angels were on the clock.

Fan Post of the Day

We love Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión, and one of the great alternate logos is the San Antonio Flyin’ Chanclas. This fan saw herself on MiLB’s Instagram feed and shared the great photo. That’s a good looking jersey and hat!

Pro Post of the Day

Arguably the two best Dominican hitters in big league history just hangin’ out by the cage. On Thursday evening Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero wished his friend Manny Ramírez a happy birthday on Instagram. Oh, to be a fly on the wall when those two legends talked hitting!

OTD

2015 – After catching for 17 innings, Milwaukee’s Martín Maldonado took matters into his own hands. Maldonado hits a walk-off home run off Vidal Nuño III to end the marathon game. He finished the day 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.

2012 – When Colorado’s Carlos González came to the plate in the second inning the Astros intentionally walked him. Why? Because CarGo set a Rockies record in the first inning with a home run in his fourth consecutive at bat; he had hit homers in his last three plate appearances the day before as the Rockies beat the Astros 13-5. His three-run first inning homer off Bud Norris broke the record for Colorado, and Houston’s willingness to pitch to him.

2010 – Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez hits a grand slam in the seventh innings to blow open a close game against the Indians. What had been a 2-1 lead for the Yankees ended in an 11-2 final. The slam is the 20th bases clearing jack of ARod’s career, moving him into third all-time behind Lou Gehrig (23) and Manny Ramírez (21).

2008 – In the seventh inning of a 6-3 Red Sox victory over the Orioles, Manny Ramírez becomes the 24th player in big league history to hit 500 home runs. The history-making long ball comes off Chad Bradford.

2006 – José Castillo hits a home run in his fifth straight game as Pittsburgh beats Milwaukee 6-1.

2001 – Nelson Barrera launches his 454th Mexican League homer, breaking Hector Espino’s home run record. Espino had set the mark earlier in the 2001 season.

1964 – Juan Marichal pitches a complete game, and Orlando Cepeda goes 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI to lead the Giants to a 5-3 victory in the first game of a double header at Shea Stadium in New York. The second game of the double header takes 23 innings and 7 hours 23 minutes to play. It ends 8-6 in favor of the Giants on run-scoring singles by by Del Crandall and Felipe Alou. This is the longest doubleheader in major league history: 9 hours, 52 minutes.

Happy birthday!
