1994 – Major League Baseball players went on strike.
1984 – Luis Aparicio became the first Venezuelan player inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Harmon Killebrew‚ Rick Ferrell‚ Don Drysdale and Pee Wee Reese were also inducted.
1977 – For the second straight day‚ Oakland’s Manny Sanguillen foiled a no-hit bid. Today’s single came off the Orioles’ Jim Palmer‚ who settled for a two-hitter. Sanguillen’s hit the previous day was off the Yankees’ Mike Torrez‚ who also finished with a two-hitter.
1966 – Roberto Clemente hit one of 11 home runs at Crosley Field, tying the most in any contest and setting a major league record for an extra-inning contest. The Pirates beat the Reds 13-11.
1965 – The Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club‚ Inc. applied for a National League franchise. The nonprofit group was formed to find a replacement team for the soon-to-be-departing Braves.
