A letter to the city of Pittsburgh (my YINZ)... The city that captivated my heart. When I think about you and try to express how I feel about you, I can't help but describe you as my home, my love, and my family. I have never felt so much love and respect as I have felt in this city. I remember the first time I encountered you in 2015, you made me a bit nervous, and I surely didn't know how to approach you, however, little by little you opened up your doors and taught me to embrace my passion, and connected me with the pure adrenaline and pride of the city of Pittsburgh. You saw me at my highest high and my lowest lows. You were always my safety net, protecting me from any falls... you are my one, the only... a city full of love. Pittsburgh, wearing your shirt made me feel like a super hero and you impacted me in ways you won’t ever understand, but the greatest impact you had on me was shaping me and loving me the way I am. You make me a true PIRATE .For that, I am forever grateful. I love you Pittsburgh. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, please don’t change. Stay passionate and full of love. Thank you to my teammates, you guys are special to me , and warriors no matter what. I love you all. Thank you to my coaches and management for the best time of my life. #412forever

OTD

2014 – Jorge Soler hit a home run in his first career at-bat for the Cubs.

2013 – Alfonso Soriano hit the 399th and 400th home runs of his major league career in a 7-1 Yankees win over Toronto.

2012 – Félix Hernández threw a five-hit shutout to beat the Twins, 1-0. This was the fourth 1-0 win for King Félix of the season, a feat matched only by Ferguson Jenkins in 1974 and Bert Blyleven in 1976.

2001 – Sammy Sosa hit his 17th home run in August, tying the National League record for August homers established by Willie Mays in 1965.

2000 – Bobby Abreu hit two home runs, the second of which was a game-winning, inside-the-park home run in the 10th inning to give the Phillies a 2-1 victory over San Francisco. Abreu’s second homer was the fifth inside-the-park game-ender in Phillies history, and the first since Bob Dernier did it in 1989 – also against the Giants.

1974 – New York’s Benny Ayala homered in his first major league at bat as the Mets topped the Astros 4-2. Ayala was the first National League rookie in 13 years to go deep in his first at bat.

1972 – The Cardinals traded Matty Alou to the A’s for Bill Voss and minor leaguer Steve Easton.

1963 – Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda and Felipe Alou hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in the third inning of San Francisco’s 7-2 win against St. Louis.

1962 – The 36th and final Negro League East-West Game was played in Kansas City’s Municipal Stadium.

Happy birthday!
