OTD

2017 – Before the All-Star Game in Miami a collection of Latino Hall of Famers including Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, Roberto Alomar and Iván Rodríguez collectively threw out the first pitch. Latino stars shined in the game as well. Minnesota’s Miguel Sanó and St. Louis’ Yadier Molina each drove in one run and the game was tied after nine innings. Robinson Canó led off the tenth inning with a solo home run to earn the American League a 2-1 victory in the All-Star Game in Miami. Canó was named the game’s MVP.

2014 – Aroldis Chapman set a new Reds team record by recording a strikeout in his 40th consecutive relief appearance.

2011 – Canó won the Home Run Derby with a record-breaking performance in the final round at Chase Field. Canó, whose father pitched to the All-Star second baseman in the Derby, hit 12 home runs in the final to win the Derby.

2009 – Alex Rodriguez hit two home runs to move past Rafael Palmeiro into tenth on the all-time major league home run list.

2004 – Carlos Beltrán was selected to represent the AL in the All-Star Game. However, the Royals (AL) traded him to the Astros (NL) in June. NL manager Jack McKeon asked Beltrán to replace Ken Griffey, Jr. and the veteran outfielder still made the trip to the Midsummer Classic.

1994 – The Pirates unveiled the statue of Roberto Clemente outside Three Rivers Stadium.

1967 – In Anaheim, Tony Pérez hit a home run off Catfish Hunter in the 15th inning to end the longest All-Star Game in history.

1961 – In a game filled with defensive miscues at Candlestick Park, Roberto Clemente stole the show. Clemente tripled in the NL’s first run, drove in the second with a sacrifice fly and delivered a walk-off single off Hoyt Wilhelm in the tenth inning to give the NL a 5-4 victory. The two teams combined to commit seven errors in the game.
