El Bullpen: A minor championship, Boston toasts and Cleveland rocks
By Tab Bamford
Celebration time in Memphis
This week the Triple-A National Championship was decided between the Memphis Redbirds, champions of the Pacific Coast League, and the Durham Bulls, champions of the International League.
Big night for Gallegos
Giovanny Gallegos was traded to the Cardinals in the deal that sent Luke Voit to the Yankees at the end of July. In the midst of the Redbirds celebration, he got some more good news.
Boston celebrates in NY
Thursday night the Red Sox clinched the American League East title – at Yankee Stadium. There was more celebrating with ski goggles and beverages.
Cleveland Rocks
In Cleveland, an Indians MVP candidate was excited about the debut of a rookie. On Thursday night the Browns won a game for the first time since Christmas Eve of 2016, and José Ramírez loved what he saw from the Browns’ top overall pick, quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Mayfield showed up for the game in a baseball jersey, but not representing the Indians. That got the attention of another MVP candidate – only this one plays in Milwaukee.
Melk and Cookies
Finally, after clinching their third consecutive AL Central division crown the Indians can relax a bit. And two of their players, Melky Cabera and Carlos Carrasco, enjoyed a lighthearted moment at the expense of their nicknames.
