2016 – The Astros signed Cuban star Yuli Gurriel to a five-year deal. Gurriel defected six months earlier following the 2016 Caribbean Series.
2013 – Mariano Rivera was named the MVP of his final All-Star Game. The American League won the game 3-0.
2003 – Minnie Miñoso earned a walk in a plate appearance for the independent Northern League’s St. Paul Saints, becoming the first player to play in a professional baseball game in seven decades. The 77-year-old Cuban icon was the designated hitter for the Saints.
2002 – Manny Ramírez collected a career-high five hits as the Red Sox defeated the Tigers 9-4.
1997 – The A’s beat the Royals 11-3 but José Canseco made history that wasn’t as pleasant as the final score. Canseco struck out in all five of his at-bats to tie an Oakland franchise record. Combined with three strikeouts on Monday, Canseco also tied the major league record for strikeouts in two consecutive games with eight.
1970 – In the first game played at Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium, Tony Pérez hit the park’s first home run while leading the Reds to a 3-2 victory.
1968 – Cleveland’s José Cardenal became the fourth outfielder in major league history to turn two unassisted double plays in one season. The Indians defeated the Angels 2-1. Cardenal’s other unassisted double play during the 1968 season came on June 8.
1936 – Braves catcher Al Lopez became the third player in major league history to reach first base three times on errors. The Braves lost to the Cubs 1-0 in 10 innings.
